This week, Hack Your City went to one of those beautiful European cities where the buildings still look fresh out of the Renaissance. Prague is one of the continent’s top tourist destinations, so we asked readers for the best tips for less-than-obvious choices. We got those, plus some recs for old standards, in the comment thread. Go there to see the best comments in their entirety, or read below for some highlights.

Each Monday on Hack Your City, we ask readers for your best tips on a city: driving tips, restaurant recs, things to do, and any other advice for visitors and locals. Then on Thursday, we present the best comments. We’re working our way around the U.S. and around the globe.

Readers Ken.Moromisato, Dhawk777, and Ladislav point to Honest Guide’s 93 videos on Prague, which you can sample with this video 50 Things to Do in Prague:

Know what’s up

  • “Be sure to bring your over-the-counter medication with you. The Czech Republic does not allow it without meeting with a pharmacist.”—DiKnight
  • “Do NOT refer to the country as Czechoslovakia. Technically, you should not say Czech Republic anymore, either, as they’ve recently been pushing the name Czechia.”—Still Life with Re-Animator

Eat and drink

  • “Brasileiro Slovanský dům: What? Recommending a Brazilian restaurant in Prague?! Yes my friends, this place will give you a delicious selection of all you can eat meats for about $17. It is hidden in the basement of a mall (no joke, this place was hard to find) but well worth going to.”—Dhawk777
  • “Avoid trdelník, a typical street food you’ll see everywhere. The cinnamon smell is so tempting but they taste like bland dough.”—LizzieW

  • “For a casual meal, I recommend The Fat Cat Pub. Best club sandwich I’ve had in Europe and they have some pretty interesting alcoholic milkshakes.”—Jen
  • “The best food I had was at a vegetarian restaurant (Country Life, Melantrichova 463/15 in the Old Town), all the food was very cheap and delicious!”—UrbanGardener
  • “Visit the Klášterní pivovar Strahov Brewery!”—AverageSedanCommuter

See the city

  • “Late night tour with lots of history: Prague Castle After Dark.”—three20three

  • “The most important place to visit is Cross Club, which is a heavy metal bar just outside the Old Town. Even if you don’t like metal, you need to see this place. It is decorated using old kitchen utensils, gears and wires, all moving around mechanically on the walls, giving it a crazy Mad Max kind of feel. The best idea is to head there around 6pm, because the downstairs club will be open but not yet crowded with party kids.”—Daryl
  • “Catch some live jazz at AghaRTA Jazz Club. Great music performed in a basement dating back to the 14th Century. Coolest room ever.”—steel murkin
  • “We were lucky to walk through Charles Bridge around 9 AM, when its less crowded, but during the day try to avoid it if you only want to travel through.”—lindi_mo
  • “When I went back in the 90s, black light theater was still popular. The best one was Ta Fantastika and it’s still up and running. For the uninitiated, black light theater makes the best use of ultraviolet lighting to obscure certain figures and make others glow. Actors will wear body costumes that are black from head to toe. But those characters will move objects on stage that are glowing in the ultraviolet light.”—Jim Philips
  • “There is an Apple museum in Prague and they have one of the biggest collections of Apple products.”—LadaSoukup
  • “If you get a chance, dress up a bit and go to an opera at the last minute. You can get discounted rates (especially for students, ex: ~$2) and every opera I’ve been to around Prague all had English subtitles!”—Dave
  • “The Museum of Communism is a hoot, with super snarky postcards to buy at the gift shop.”—The Artist Formerly Known As…
  • “The National Technical Museum sounds horribly boring, but is actually a blast. It’s fully of crazy prototype automobiles and unusual airplanes, and weird ephemera from Czechoslovakia’s early 20th century heyday as a design powerhouse. As a bonus: when you exit the building and walk straight across the street, you will find yourself in Letna Park, which has a couple of great beer gardens that overlook the city.”—MLAW76
  • “We were delighted to find *three* Alphonse Mucha exhibits, and I think they are more or less permanent. You don’t have to travel far in Prague to run into Mucha.”—Lee Shackleford
  • “See the Jewish Ghetto and the synagogues. Hitler was going to build a museum in Prague about the Jews (after he killed all of them, naturally), so the synagogues there are beautiful and have many unique artifacts.”—mazzieD
  • “If you have a full day, go to Cesky Krumlov. It’s a fairy tale come to life and one of my favorite places in the country. Buses go regularly, check out Student Agency/Regiojet buses. It’s about 3 hours from Prague, and you need max 4 hours there.”—leafonthewind
